BIO.

Eliana is an interdisciplinary artist originally from Portland, Oregon who currently works, studies, and resides in Chicago, Illinois. She explores personal themes of cultural heritage and reckons with feelings of loss and isolation though installation, painting, and print
mediums. She is currently a Senior in the Visual Arts BFA program at
Columbia College Chicago.

STATEMENT

My portfolio is a collection of artwork that presents parts of my complicated and at times, painful identity. From culture and family history to interests and influences, the work that I make is an irrevocably authentic reflection of myself, in creativity and technicality.

I focus on cultural aspects of my personality and how they intersect with and play a part in making me who I am as a whole. I use my work as an expression, an extension of how I process the world, and a big part of how I see the world is through a cultural lens. I use my art to express the ways in which culture influences the way I think and feel the world around me. The connections I have to both American and Chinese cultures is an feeling I want to share, to help others better understand and feel how much I value my culture.

I am inspired by my own connections to culture, as well as the connections and perspective I have with my mother and her mother, whom I look up to immensely as the cultural cornerstone in my life. Much of how I am able to connect with her is based on our shared cultural influences, from food to language and interests, I wanted to be able to better communicate with her through these things that we hold dear.
As well as addressing a range of topics and ideas, my work also ranges in medium. I value versatility and experimentation in my work because of the freedom of expression it allows me to utilize. From printmaking to digital art, I enjoy the process of problem solving and turning an idea into something that is tangible.
